Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for a variety of ailments, primarily as an anti-inflammatory, demulcent, and antimicrobial agent. In the context of sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, there are historical records and ethnobotanical reports suggesting that licorice root was sometimes included in herbal remedies or decoctions used to alleviate symptoms or as a general antimicrobial agent. However, its use for gonorrhea is based on tradition rather than robust scientific validation. The rationale for using licorice root would have been its perceived ability to reduce inflammation and fight infection, as well as its broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties observed in vitro.

Modern scientific studies have shown that licorice root contains compounds (such as glycyrrhizin and glabridin) that possess antibacterial and antiviral activities, but direct evidence of efficacy against Neisseria gonorrhoeae (the bacterium responsible for gonorrhea) in humans is lacking. There are no clinical trials or high-quality studies supporting the use of licorice root for the treatment or support of gonorrhea. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and historical practices, the scientific evidence is minimal, and it should not be relied upon as a primary or sole treatment for gonorrhea, which requires effective antibiotic therapy.
