Zinc is supported by scientific evidence for use in the treatment and management of gingivitis, though the evidence is moderate rather than strong. Zinc is a trace element with recognized antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are relevant to oral health. Several clinical studies and systematic reviews have evaluated zinc-containing toothpastes and mouth rinses. These formulations often show a reduction in dental plaque and gingival inflammation compared to placebo or standard oral care, likely attributable to zinc's ability to inhibit bacterial growth and reduce the formation of dental biofilms. Zinc ions also appear to interfere with the metabolism of oral pathogens and can reduce volatile sulfur compounds, which are associated with oral malodor and may indirectly contribute to gingival health. The American Dental Association and other dental organizations acknowledge the inclusion of zinc in oral care products, and some products with zinc have received the ADA Seal of Acceptance based on demonstrated efficacy in reducing plaque and gingivitis.
