Chamomile (Matricaria recutita or Chamaemelum nobile) has been traditionally used for a variety of inflammatory conditions, including those affecting the oral cavity. More recently, scientific studies have begun to investigate its efficacy in managing gingivitis, a common inflammatory gum disease. Several clinical trials and in vitro studies have demonstrated that chamomile extracts possess anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, which can be beneficial in reducing the severity of gingival inflammation and bacterial load in the mouth.

For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that mouthwashes containing chamomile extract can reduce gingival bleeding and plaque indices compared to placebo, although the effects may be less pronounced than those observed with chlorhexidine, the gold standard in periodontal therapy. The active compounds in chamomile, such as apigenin, chamazulene, and bisabolol, are believed to inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduce oxidative stress in gingival tissues.

Despite these promising findings, the overall quality and quantity of evidence remain limited. Many studies suffer from small sample sizes, short intervention durations, and lack of long-term follow-up. Therefore, while there is emerging scientific support for chamomile’s use as an adjunctive treatment for gingivitis, more robust research is needed to establish its efficacy and optimal usage protocols.
