Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for liver-related ailments, and recent scientific research has begun to explore its potential benefits for fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis). Several animal studies and a limited number of small human clinical trials suggest that licorice root extracts, particularly those standardized for glycyrrhizin, may have hepatoprotective effects. These effects are thought to be related to anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic properties. Glycyrrhizin may reduce liver enzyme levels and decrease markers of inflammation in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
However, the overall quality of evidence is modest. Most clinical studies are small, short-term, or lack rigorous controls, making it difficult to draw definitive conclusions. The mechanisms proposed include the modulation of inflammatory cytokines, reduction in oxidative stress, and improvement in lipid metabolism. While promising, these findings are not yet robust enough to warrant licorice root as a standard treatment for fatty liver disease. Furthermore, excessive use of licorice can lead to adverse effects such as hypertension and hypokalemia due to its mineralocorticoid activity.
In summary, while there is emerging scientific evidence that supports the potential benefit of licorice root for fatty liver disease, the strength of the evidence is currently limited. More large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in this context.
