Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. In these systems, licorice root is believed to help soothe mucous membranes and is often used for respiratory ailments, such as sore throat, cough, and bronchitis. The rationale for using licorice root to support the Eustachian tubes (which connect the middle ear to the back of the throat and help equalize ear pressure) is based on its general demulcent (soothing) and anti-inflammatory properties as described in traditional texts. However, there is little to no direct scientific research specifically examining licorice root's effect on the Eustachian tubes or middle ear function. Most available evidence pertains to its broader effects on mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Therefore, while traditional herbalists may recommend licorice root to support Eustachian tube health as part of a holistic approach to upper respiratory wellness, this is not substantiated by clinical trials or rigorous scientific studies directly focused on this body system.
