Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, especially in Chinese and Ayurvedic systems, to address various hormonal and gynecological issues, including symptoms believed to be related to low estrogen. The root contains phytoestrogens—plant-derived compounds with mild estrogenic activity—such as glabridin, which can bind to estrogen receptors and potentially mimic some effects of endogenous estrogen. Historically, licorice has been used to ease menopausal symptoms, menstrual irregularities, and other conditions thought to be linked to hormonal imbalances.

However, scientific evidence specifically supporting licorice root for treating low estrogen is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies demonstrate weak estrogenic activity, but clinical trials in humans are sparse and generally not conclusive. The majority of the support for licorice root in this context comes from traditional use, not from robust clinical research. It's important to note that licorice root also contains glycyrrhizin, which can cause significant side effects if consumed in excess, including hypertension and potassium imbalance. Therefore, while licorice root has traditional backing for supporting estrogen-related conditions, its efficacy and safety are not well-validated by modern science, and caution is advised in its use.
