Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla or Chamaemelum nobile) has been used traditionally in herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including as a mild sedative, for digestive complaints, and topically for skin irritations. In some European folk traditions, chamomile has also been used as a home remedy for earaches, usually in the form of warm chamomile tea compresses or, less commonly, chamomile oil drops. The rationale behind this usage is primarily its anti-inflammatory and mild analgesic properties, which are thought to soothe irritated tissues and provide some relief from pain.

However, scientific evidence supporting chamomile’s effectiveness specifically for ear infections or earaches is extremely limited. There are no well-conducted clinical trials demonstrating that chamomile, when applied to the ear or taken orally, can treat or significantly alleviate ear infections or ear pain. The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities observed in laboratory studies of chamomile extracts have not been translated into robust evidence for this use in humans. Therefore, while the traditional use exists, the evidence base is weak, and chamomile should not be considered a primary or proven treatment for ear infections or earaches, especially in place of medical evaluation and care.
