Bromelain is a mixture of proteolytic enzymes derived from the pineapple plant (Ananas comosus). Its use in supporting or treating cuts and wounds is supported primarily by scientific evidence, though the overall quality and quantity of that evidence is moderate and not robust. Bromelain has demonstrated anti-inflammatory, anti-edematous, and fibrinolytic properties in both animal studies and some human research. These properties are potentially beneficial in wound healing, as bromelain can reduce swelling, decrease bruising, and promote the removal of damaged tissue (debridement), which is a critical step in the healing of cuts and wounds.

Topically, bromelain has been evaluated for its effectiveness in debriding necrotic tissue in chronic wounds and burns. Several clinical studies have shown that enzymatic debridement with bromelain-based preparations can be effective, resulting in faster wound cleaning and improved healing environments compared to traditional treatments. Orally administered bromelain has also been evaluated for its ability to reduce inflammation and edema following traumatic injuries or surgical procedures, but its effects on simple cuts are less well established.

While these findings are promising, comprehensive, high-quality clinical trials specifically addressing the use of bromelain for treating simple cuts are limited. Most of the current evidence is extrapolated from studies on more complex wound types or from its general anti-inflammatory effects. Therefore, while there is some scientific justification for its use, the evidence is not strong enough to recommend bromelain as a primary treatment for cuts without further research.
