Orange, particularly in the form of orange peel, has been used traditionally in various cultures to support relief from cough and related respiratory ailments. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dried tangerine peel (Chen Pi) is used to help resolve phlegm and ease coughing. Similarly, in folk medicine across the Mediterranean and South Asia, orange peel infusions or syrups are sometimes employed as home remedies for coughs and colds. The rationale often cited in traditional contexts involves the aromatic oils and flavonoids found in orange peel, which are believed to have mild expectorant and soothing properties.

From a scientific standpoint, however, direct evidence supporting the use of oranges or orange peel specifically for treating cough is limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that citrus flavonoids like hesperidin and vitamin C, present in oranges, may have general anti-inflammatory and immune-supportive effects, potentially aiding in the management of respiratory symptoms. However, clinical trials directly evaluating orange or orange peel for cough relief are lacking. Thus, while the traditional use is well-documented, scientific validation remains weak and indirect, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
