Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Platycodon root (Platycodon grandiflorus), also known as balloon flower root or "jie geng" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a longstanding traditional use for treating respiratory conditions such as bronchial congestion, cough, and sore throat. In TCM, it is believed to "open up the lungs" and expel phlegm. Scientific studies in recent decades have begun to validate some of these uses. Research shows that platycodin saponins, major active compounds in platycodon root, possess notable expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. Animal and in vitro studies have demonstrated that extracts from platycodon root can promote the clearance of bronchial mucus, reduce airway inflammation, and inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Some clinical studies in Asia have reported efficacy for platycodon-containing formulas in reducing symptoms of bronchitis and productive cough. However, rigorous, large-scale randomized controlled trials in humans are limited, and most available studies focus on multi-herb formulas rather than isolated platycodon root. While the traditional use is strong and there is growing preclinical evidence, the direct clinical evidence in humans is moderate, supporting a rating of 3 out of 5. Platycodon root remains a widely used and promising herbal remedy for bronchial congestion, particularly as part of combination therapies.
