Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for supporting respiratory health and alleviating symptoms like congestion, cough, and sore throat. Traditionally, licorice root was believed to act as an expectorant, helping to loosen and expel mucus from the respiratory tract, thereby easing chest congestion. Its demulcent (soothing) properties were also valued for calming irritated throat and airway tissues.

Scientific evidence for licorice root’s efficacy in treating congestion specifically is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that glycyrrhizin, one of the main active compounds in licorice, has anti-inflammatory and mild antiviral effects, and may modulate immune responses. These actions could theoretically contribute to reduced airway inflammation and mucus production. However, clinical trials directly evaluating licorice root for respiratory congestion in humans are sparse and often methodologically weak.

In summary, licorice root’s use for congestion is rooted primarily in traditional practice, with only modest support from preclinical studies and limited clinical research. It is still widely used in herbal formulas for colds and respiratory complaints, but robust, high-quality scientific validation is lacking. Caution is also advised due to possible side effects with prolonged or high-dose use, such as hypertension and electrolyte imbalances.
