Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) has a long history of traditional use for soothing respiratory tract ailments, including colds. Traditionally, marshmallow root has been utilized for its demulcent (soothing and protective) properties, believed to help alleviate sore throats and coughs associated with the common cold. The mucilage content in marshmallow root is thought to coat irritated mucous membranes, providing symptomatic relief. Historical records from European herbal medicine and traditional systems such as Ayurveda mention marshmallow as an ingredient in remedies for upper respiratory issues. However, the scientific evidence supporting marshmallow’s efficacy in preventing or significantly treating colds is limited. There are some laboratory and animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory and soothing effects on mucous membranes, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. Most modern uses of marshmallow for colds rely on its historical reputation rather than on strong scientific validation.
