Oranges, particularly their peels and extracts, have traditionally been used in herbal and folk medicine to support circulation and cardiovascular health. The rationale stems from the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids (notably hesperidin and naringenin), which are believed to strengthen blood vessel walls and improve microcirculation. In traditional Chinese medicine and Mediterranean herbalism, orange peel is sometimes used in formulations aimed at invigorating the blood and addressing symptoms such as cold extremities or varicose veins.
However, while there is a long-standing tradition of using oranges and their derivatives for circulatory support, the scientific evidence directly linking orange or its components to significant improvements in circulation is limited. Some small clinical studies and in vitro research have shown that citrus flavonoids can have beneficial effects on endothelial function, reduce inflammation, and improve capillary resistance, which may theoretically support circulation. Hesperidin, in particular, is sometimes used in supplements for chronic venous insufficiency, although these products often use purified or concentrated forms rather than whole orange fruit or juice.
Overall, while traditional use is well documented and there are promising early scientific findings concerning specific compounds found in oranges, robust clinical evidence confirming their effectiveness for treating poor circulation remains limited.
