Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Its use for chicken pox specifically is based mainly on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. In historical contexts, licorice root has been used to soothe sore throats, reduce inflammation, and help with various skin conditions, including rashes and eruptions that are similar to chicken pox lesions. The root contains glycyrrhizin, which has demonstrated antiviral and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory studies. Some preclinical research has shown that glycyrrhizin can inhibit the replication of certain viruses, such as herpes simplex and varicella-zoster (the virus that causes chicken pox and shingles), but these findings are preliminary and are not direct clinical evidence for effectiveness in chicken pox in humans.

Despite these promising laboratory findings, there is a lack of well-conducted clinical trials evaluating the safety and effectiveness of licorice root for the treatment of chicken pox. Most recommendations for its use are rooted in traditional herbal medicine rather than evidence-based practice. Therefore, while licorice root is traditionally used for symptoms associated with chicken pox, scientific validation of its efficacy is limited. Caution is also advised, as licorice root can have significant side effects, especially with prolonged use.
