Evidence supporting the use of: Garlic bulb
For the health condition: Cardiovascular Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Garlic bulb (Allium sativum) is both a traditional and scientifically investigated remedy for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Historically, garlic has been used in many cultures to support heart health, with references in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Chinese medical texts. However, modern scientific research provides moderate evidence supporting its use, particularly for its potential to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, and exert antiplatelet effects.
Meta-analyses and systematic reviews indicate that garlic supplementation can lead to modest reductions in total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, especially in individuals with elevated levels. The antihypertensive effects are also documented, with some studies reporting average reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive patients. The active compounds in garlic, such as allicin and other sulfur-containing molecules, are believed to contribute to these cardiovascular benefits through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilatory mechanisms.
While some clinical trials show statistically significant but modest improvements in cardiovascular risk markers, results are variable and often depend on the type of garlic preparation, dosage, and study duration. Garlic is generally considered safe, though high doses can cause gastrointestinal discomfort or interact with anticoagulant medications. Overall, garlic is supported by moderate scientific evidence for cardiovascular health, but it should be viewed as a complementary approach rather than a replacement for conventional therapies.
