Evidence supporting the use of: Cinnamon
For the health condition: Cardiovascular Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cinnamon has been traditionally used in various cultures for a range of health conditions, including cardiovascular disorders; however, more recently, its cardiovascular effects have been investigated in scientific studies. The primary areas of focus include cinnamon’s potential to lower blood glucose, improve lipid profiles, and reduce blood pressure—all of which are relevant to cardiovascular disease risk. Several small randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have suggested that cinnamon supplementation (typically Cinnamomum cassia or C. zeylanicum) may have a modest effect on lowering fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in people with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome. Some studies also report slight reductions in blood pressure.
Despite these findings, the overall quality of evidence is mixed and limited by small sample sizes, short intervention durations, and variability in cinnamon type and dosage. Larger, well-designed trials are lacking, and there is no consensus on the optimal dose for cardiovascular benefit. Furthermore, most research has focused on surrogate markers (like cholesterol and glucose) rather than hard cardiovascular outcomes (such as heart attack or stroke). Therefore, while there is some scientific evidence supporting cinnamon's potential cardiovascular benefits, it remains modest and preliminary. Current guidelines do not recommend cinnamon as a primary or standalone therapy for cardiovascular disease, but it may be considered as an adjunct to conventional treatment in some cases.
