Zinc is an essential trace element involved in numerous biological functions, including immune system regulation, DNA synthesis, and cellular repair. Its role in cancer prevention and treatment has been explored, primarily due to its antioxidant properties and its importance in maintaining immune competence. Several epidemiological and laboratory studies have examined zinc's relationship with cancer risk, particularly for prostate, esophageal, and colorectal cancers. However, the evidence supporting zinc supplementation specifically for cancer prevention or as a part of cancer treatment remains weak and inconclusive. Some observational studies suggest that adequate zinc status may be associated with a reduced risk of certain cancers, likely through the maintenance of healthy cellular processes and immune surveillance. Conversely, other studies have found no significant association or have even raised concerns about excessive zinc intake potentially increasing cancer risk in some populations.
Currently, there is insufficient high-quality clinical trial evidence to recommend zinc supplementation for cancer prevention or as an adjunctive cancer therapy in people who are not zinc deficient. Most clinical guidelines do not support routine zinc supplementation for these purposes. However, zinc deficiency, which can compromise immune function, is addressed in cancer patients when present, as part of general nutritional support.
In summary, while there is a scientific rationale for investigating zinc in cancer prevention and treatment, current evidence does not justify its use beyond addressing deficiency, and further research is required to clarify its potential role.
