Zinc is scientifically recognized as an important micronutrient in wound healing, including in the context of burns and scalds. Multiple studies have demonstrated that zinc plays a crucial role in cellular proliferation, immune response, and the synthesis of collagen, all of which are essential processes in skin repair. Zinc deficiency has been linked to delayed wound healing, and supplementation can improve outcomes in individuals with low zinc levels. Topical zinc formulations (such as zinc oxide creams) have been traditionally used to promote wound healing by providing a moist environment, reducing inflammation, and protecting the wound from infection. Clinical trials and animal studies have shown that both oral and topical zinc can reduce healing time and decrease the risk of infection in burn wounds, although results are variable and more robust, large-scale human studies are needed. However, while there is scientific evidence to support zinc's use in wound and burn care, it is most effective in cases where a deficiency exists or there is a specific indication for increased zinc needs. Routine supplementation in individuals with normal zinc status is less clearly beneficial, and excessive zinc can interfere with healing or cause toxicity. Therefore, zinc is scientifically justified as an adjunct in the management of burns and scalds, with a moderate level of evidence supporting its use, particularly in populations at risk of deficiency.
