Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme extracted from pineapple stems, has been used both traditionally and in modern medicine to support the healing of bruises (contusions). The scientific rationale for its use centers on bromelain’s anti-inflammatory and fibrinolytic properties. Several clinical studies and reviews suggest that bromelain can reduce swelling, pain, and healing time associated with soft tissue injuries, including bruising.

Research indicates that bromelain may accelerate the resorption of hematomas (collections of blood beneath the skin) and improve microcirculation by breaking down fibrin, thereby facilitating the removal of blood and metabolic waste products from the injured tissue. A number of randomized controlled trials have shown that oral bromelain supplementation can decrease post-traumatic and post-surgical inflammation and bruising. For example, a double-blind study published in the Journal of the Indian Medical Association observed that patients who received bromelain had a more rapid resolution of bruising and swelling compared to placebo.

While the evidence is supportive, it is not uniformly strong, and some studies have methodological limitations, such as small sample sizes or lack of blinding. Nonetheless, bromelain is widely used in Europe as an adjunctive treatment for traumatic injuries, and overall, there is moderate scientific support for its use in promoting the healing of bruises.
