Zinc is scientifically recognized for its role in supporting the immune system and promoting wound healing, which underpins its use in the management of boils (furuncles). Boils are localized bacterial skin infections, most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Several clinical studies have demonstrated the benefits of zinc supplementation, particularly in individuals with recurrent or resistant skin infections. For example, a study published in the Journal of Dermatology (1980) showed that oral zinc sulfate significantly reduced the recurrence rate of boils in patients with chronic furunculosis compared to placebo. The proposed mechanisms include zinc’s ability to modulate immune responses, inhibit bacterial adherence and growth, and support tissue repair through its role in collagen synthesis and cellular proliferation.
Topical zinc preparations have also been investigated for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce the severity and duration of skin infections like boils. However, while there is scientific evidence supporting zinc’s use, especially orally, the strength of evidence is moderate (hence, a rating of 3). Most studies are relatively small, and more robust, large-scale trials would be valuable to further validate these findings. Overall, zinc can be considered a scientifically supported adjunctive treatment for boils, particularly in cases of recurrence or zinc deficiency, but it should not replace standard medical therapies such as incision and drainage or antibiotics when indicated.
