Evidence supporting the use of: Chamomile
For the health condition: Acid Indigestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chamomile (Matricaria recutita and Chamaemelum nobile) has long been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Europe, for the relief of gastrointestinal complaints, including acid indigestion (also known as dyspepsia). Historical texts and folk practices describe chamomile tea and extracts as soothing agents for the digestive tract, helping to reduce symptoms such as bloating, nausea, and mild stomach discomfort after eating. The presumed mechanisms include chamomile’s mild antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory effects, which may relax the smooth muscles of the gut and ease discomfort.
While there is a substantial tradition of chamomile use for digestive issues, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for acid indigestion specifically remains limited. Some animal studies and small clinical trials suggest that chamomile extracts might reduce gastric acidity and protect the stomach lining, but these findings are not robust or definitive. Most clinical research examines chamomile in combination with other herbs, making it difficult to isolate its effects. As a result, the primary justification for chamomile’s use in acid indigestion is based on traditional and anecdotal evidence rather than solid scientific validation. Chamomile is generally considered safe for most people when consumed as a tea or in moderate amounts, but its effectiveness for acid indigestion has not been conclusively demonstrated in large, well-controlled human studies.
