Pawpaw (Carica papaya) has been used traditionally in various cultures for the treatment of abscesses and other skin infections. In many parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, the leaves, seeds, and especially the ripe and unripe fruit, are applied topically or used in poultices to help drain abscesses and promote wound healing. The traditional rationale is based on the plant's known proteolytic enzymes (notably papain), which are thought to help break down necrotic tissue, reduce inflammation, and facilitate the natural drainage of pus from abscesses. Additionally, pawpaw latex has been used as a topical remedy due to its purported antimicrobial properties. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that papain and other constituents possess antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities, which could theoretically contribute to healing skin infections and abscesses. For example, in vitro studies have shown that papaya extracts can inhibit certain bacteria and fungi, and they have been found to promote wound healing in animal models. Nevertheless, clinical trials specifically assessing the effectiveness of pawpaw for treating abscesses in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge. Therefore, while there is a plausible biological basis and a strong traditional precedent for using pawpaw in abscess management, high-quality scientific evidence to support its efficacy is currently limited.
