Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Magnesium has been studied for its potential effects on lipid metabolism, including its possible role in lowering high triglyceride levels. Several observational and interventional studies have shown that individuals with lower magnesium intake or serum levels tend to have higher triglyceride concentrations. Magnesium is believed to influence lipid metabolism through its role as a cofactor in enzymatic reactions, particularly those involved in carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported modest reductions in triglyceride levels with magnesium supplementation, especially in populations with magnesium deficiency or metabolic syndrome. However, results are inconsistent, and meta-analyses generally conclude that while magnesium supplementation may have a beneficial effect on various components of the lipid profile, the effect on triglycerides specifically is relatively small and not always statistically significant.

Clinical guidelines do not currently recommend magnesium supplementation as a primary therapy for high triglycerides; its use is more often considered as supportive, especially in patients with documented deficiency. Overall, the scientific evidence supporting magnesium’s role in lowering triglycerides is limited and of low to moderate quality. The rating of 2 reflects that while there is some scientific rationale and limited clinical evidence, it is not robust or consistent enough to be considered a mainstay treatment. More research is needed to clarify the populations and conditions under which magnesium supplementation may be most effective for managing elevated triglycerides.
