In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), ginseng (Panax ginseng) has long been used to tonify the Spleen, which in TCM theory is associated with digestion, energy production, and fluid metabolism. The concept of the "Spleen" in TCM is broader than the anatomical spleen in Western medicine and refers to a functional system related to the transformation and transportation of nutrients and fluids. Ginseng is classified as a "qi tonic" and is believed to strengthen Spleen qi, combat fatigue, and improve vitality. Classic TCM texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing," describe ginseng as a superior herb for restoring Spleen function and treating symptoms like poor appetite, fatigue, and loose stools, all of which are attributed to Spleen qi deficiency.

Modern scientific research has focused on ginseng’s adaptogenic and immunomodulatory properties, but there is limited direct correlation between these effects and the TCM-defined Spleen system. Nonetheless, studies have found that ginseng may improve physical stamina, cognitive performance, and reduce fatigue, which aligns with TCM's understanding of Spleen support. However, the rationale for using ginseng for the Spleen system remains primarily rooted in tradition rather than modern scientific validation of this specific TCM concept.
