Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been explored in dermatology for its anti-inflammatory and skin-soothing properties, and there is some scientific evidence supporting its use in the management of rosacea. The active compound in licorice root, glycyrrhizin (and its metabolite glycyrrhetinic acid), has demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reducing oxidative stress. Additionally, licorice root contains liquiritin and isoliquiritigenin, which have skin-lightening and calming effects, potentially helping with the redness and irritation seen in rosacea.

Clinical studies are limited but promising. A double-blind, randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment (2005) found that a topical gel containing 2% licorice extract significantly reduced erythema (redness) in patients with mild to moderate rosacea compared to placebo. The improvement was attributed to the anti-inflammatory action of licorice constituents. However, these studies are few and usually involve small sample sizes and short durations, so more robust clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.

In summary, while licorice root’s use for rosacea is supported by a plausible mechanism of action and preliminary clinical evidence, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low to moderate. The use is not primarily based on traditional medicine for rosacea, but rather on emerging scientific studies. Therefore, it rates a 2 on the evidence scale, indicating early promising results but insufficient large-scale validation.
