Evidence supporting the use of: Raspberry
For the health condition: Labor and Delivery
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Red raspberry leaf (Rubus idaeus) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly by midwives and herbalists, to support labor and delivery. The leaves are commonly made into teas or extracts and are believed to tone the muscles of the uterus, potentially making labor more efficient. This practice is widespread in Western herbalism, especially among women seeking to prepare for childbirth naturally.
Despite its popularity, scientific evidence for the use of raspberry leaf during labor and delivery is limited and not robust. A few small clinical studies and animal experiments have suggested a possible effect on uterine muscle tone, but results have been inconsistent. For example, a small randomized controlled trial published in 2001 found no significant difference in labor outcomes between women who consumed raspberry leaf and those who did not, though there was a suggestion of slightly shorter second stages of labor and less use of forceps in the raspberry group. However, the trial's small sample size and methodological limitations prevent strong conclusions.
Most of the support for raspberry leaf use in labor comes from traditional practice and anecdotal reports rather than high-quality clinical evidence. No major medical organizations currently recommend its use due to insufficient data on safety and efficacy. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and has a benign safety profile in most cases, it should be approached with caution and discussed with a healthcare provider.
