The use of orange, particularly sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) peel or orange blossom (neroli), for supporting or treating insomnia is primarily rooted in traditional medicine. In various cultures, dried orange peel or orange blossom tea has been used as a mild sedative or sleep aid, often included in calming herbal blends. The practice is especially noted in Traditional Chinese Medicine and some European folk remedies, where orange peel is believed to calm the mind and aid in sleep. Aromatherapy also sometimes employs orange essential oil for its purported relaxing and anxiolytic effects.

However, scientific validation for the effectiveness of orange or its derivatives in treating insomnia is limited. Some small studies suggest that inhalation of orange essential oil may reduce anxiety levels and promote relaxation, which could indirectly support better sleep, but these studies are of low quality and often not specific to insomnia.
