Magnesium has been investigated as a treatment for various types of headache, most notably migraine, but also for tension-type headaches. The scientific evidence supporting magnesium supplementation specifically for tension-type headaches is limited and not as robust as for migraines. A few small clinical trials and observational studies have suggested that individuals with chronic tension-type headaches may have lower serum or intracellular magnesium levels compared to healthy controls. Some research hypothesizes that magnesium deficiency may contribute to increased muscle tension or altered neurotransmitter function, both of which are implicated in tension-type headaches.

However, randomized controlled trials examining magnesium supplementation for tension-type headaches are scarce and show mixed results. The majority of positive data for magnesium’s effectiveness in headache management pertains to migraine, where several studies and clinical guidelines support its use, especially in individuals with low magnesium levels or in specific populations such as pregnant women. For tension-type headaches, a few small-scale studies and anecdotal reports indicate some benefit, but these findings have not been widely replicated or confirmed in large, high-quality trials.

Overall, while there is some scientific rationale and limited preliminary evidence for using magnesium in tension-type headache, the support is not strong, and clinical guidelines do not routinely recommend it for this purpose.
