Platycodon root (Platycodon grandiflorus), commonly known as balloon flower root or Jie Geng in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use primarily for respiratory and throat-related conditions rather than directly for swollen lymph glands. However, in TCM, it is often included in herbal formulas designed to "disperse phlegm," "promote the movement of qi," and "open up the lungs and throat." These actions are sometimes interpreted, especially in folk and integrative medicine contexts, as potentially beneficial for swellings, including those of the lymph glands, particularly when such swellings are associated with respiratory infections or throat inflammation. Historically, the connection to lymph nodes or "glands" is indirect; swollen lymph nodes often occur alongside throat and respiratory infections, and Platycodon is used to address these core issues. Some TCM texts mention its use for “abscesses” or “swellings,” but modern interpretations linking it specifically to lymphatic swelling are not prominent. Scientific validation for Platycodon's direct effect on lymphatic swelling is limited. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which may theoretically reduce swelling or support immune function. However, robust clinical trials supporting its use for swollen lymph glands are lacking. Therefore, while there is a traditional foundation for its inclusion in formulas for conditions that could involve lymphatic swelling, the specific use for "swollen glands" is rooted more in traditional, symptomatic treatment rather than targeted, evidence-based practice.
