Typhonium species, particularly Typhonium flagelliforme, have a long history of use in traditional medicine across Southeast Asia and China. Their tubers and leaves have been traditionally applied for a variety of ailments, including inflammation, wounds, and oral conditions such as canker sores (aphthous ulcers). The rationale is often based on the plant’s purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which are thought to soothe oral mucosa and promote healing. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. A few in vitro studies suggest some extracts of Typhonium may possess mild antibacterial or anti-inflammatory effects, but these are not specific to canker sores, nor are they robust or widely replicated. No well-designed clinical trials have been published that directly assess Typhonium’s efficacy for canker sores in humans. Most references remain anecdotal or are part of ethnobotanical surveys. Therefore, while Typhonium’s use for canker sores is justified by tradition, the current scientific evidence does not robustly support its efficacy for this condition. Caution is also advised, as some Typhonium species contain potentially toxic compounds, and improper preparation can be harmful.
