The inner bark is primarily valued for its demulcent properties—meaning it forms a soothing gel when mixed with water, helping to coat and soothe mucous membranes of the digestive tract. Historically, it has been used to address a variety of gastrointestinal complaints, including sore throats, gastritis, and digestive discomfort. Regarding appetite, slippery elm bark is sometimes included in traditional formulas intended to support individuals who are debilitated, recovering from illness, or experiencing weakness and food aversion. The gentle, bland gruel made from slippery elm bark is easy to digest and can provide mild nourishment, which may indirectly support appetite in people who have difficulty eating regular foods.
