Vitamin C is widely associated with adrenal gland function in both scientific literature and clinical practice. The adrenal glands contain some of the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the body, and vitamin C plays a role in the biosynthesis of adrenal hormones, particularly cortisol and other glucocorticoids. During periods of physiological stress, the adrenal glands release more cortisol and vitamin C, and some animal studies suggest that adrenal vitamin C content is depleted during stress, implying increased utilization. Additionally, vitamin C serves as a cofactor for dopamine β-hydroxylase, an enzyme critical for the synthesis of norepinephrine, a key adrenal hormone.

However, while these biochemical relationships are well-documented, clinical evidence supporting vitamin C supplementation specifically for adrenal health in humans is limited. Most studies focus on vitamin C’s role in stress response or immune support rather than direct enhancement of adrenal gland function. Some small trials suggest that vitamin C may help lower cortisol levels and subjective stress, but these findings are not consistent or robust enough to warrant strong recommendations. Therefore, while the scientific rationale exists and is supported by animal and biochemical studies, human clinical data are limited, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
