Eucalyptus, particularly its essential oil (Eucalyptus globulus), has a well-established traditional use for treating lung congestion, and this use is partially supported by scientific evidence. The main active compound, eucalyptol (also known as 1,8-cineole), has demonstrated mucolytic (mucus-thinning) and bronchodilatory effects in both laboratory and clinical studies. Several randomized controlled trials have shown that eucalyptol can help reduce the frequency and severity of cough, improve airway clearance, and decrease sputum viscosity in patients with respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma. Inhalation of eucalyptus oil vapor or use of over-the-counter preparations containing eucalyptol is thought to work by stimulating the secretion of watery mucus in the airways and relaxing the bronchial muscles, thus making it easier to expel mucus and breathe more freely.
However, the overall quality of the evidence is moderate. While laboratory and small clinical studies are promising, large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are relatively few. Eucalyptus oil is recognized by organizations such as the German Commission E for its expectorant properties. Safety should be considered, particularly in young children or when used in undiluted form, as concentrated eucalyptus oil can be toxic if ingested or applied improperly. Overall, eucalyptus has a solid foundation in both tradition and science for supporting lung congestion, but further research is warranted to clarify optimal dosing and efficacy.
