Evidence supporting the use of: Green tea
For the health condition: Wrinkles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Green tea has gained attention for its potential anti-wrinkle and skin-protective properties, supported by a growing body of scientific evidence. The key active components in green tea—particularly polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—exhibit strong antioxidant activities. These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, which are a major contributor to skin aging and wrinkle formation. Multiple in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that green tea extracts can protect skin cells from ultraviolet (UV) damage, a primary cause of premature wrinkles. Furthermore, some small-scale human studies suggest that topical application and oral supplementation with green tea extracts may improve skin elasticity, reduce roughness, and decrease wrinkle depth. For example, a 2013 randomized controlled trial found that women who consumed green tea supplements and used a topical green tea cream for 8 weeks showed significant improvements in skin structure and elasticity compared to placebo. While the results are promising, most clinical trials to date are limited by small sample sizes and short durations. Overall, the evidence for green tea's anti-wrinkle effects is moderate and continues to grow, justifying its use as a supportive ingredient in skincare. However, more large-scale and long-term clinical studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy in wrinkle prevention and treatment.
