Zinc plays a well-established role in wound healing and the treatment of sores, and its use is supported by both clinical and experimental evidence. Zinc is a crucial trace element required for DNA synthesis, cell division, and protein synthesis, all of which are essential for tissue repair and regeneration. Numerous studies have demonstrated that zinc deficiency impairs wound healing, while supplementation or topical application of zinc can promote faster and more effective healing. Zinc has anti-inflammatory effects and supports immune function, reducing the risk of wound infection. Topical zinc oxide has been widely used in clinical practice to manage ulcers, burns, and other skin lesions due to its antimicrobial and barrier-protective properties. Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that zinc supplementation, especially in individuals with zinc deficiency or chronic wounds (such as diabetic ulcers), can lead to improved healing rates. However, the benefit in well-nourished individuals is less clear, and routine supplementation is not universally recommended unless deficiency is suspected or confirmed.
