"Wasting" typically refers to the loss of muscle mass and strength, which can occur in conditions such as malnutrition, chronic illnesses (like cancer or HIV), or aging (sarcopenia). The scientific rationale for magnesium supplementation in wasting conditions is based on its critical role in muscle and protein metabolism. Magnesium deficiency can exacerbate muscle weakness and contribute to muscle wasting due to impaired protein synthesis and increased inflammation. Several studies have observed lower magnesium levels in individuals with muscle wasting or chronic illnesses, suggesting a potential association.

However, direct evidence supporting magnesium supplementation as an effective treatment specifically for muscle wasting is limited. Some clinical trials and observational studies indicate that correcting magnesium deficiencies may improve muscle function and reduce fatigue, but robust, large-scale randomized controlled trials targeting muscle wasting are lacking.
