Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani systems, for a variety of ailments. Its use for urinary tract infections (UTIs), however, is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. Historically, fenugreek seeds have been used as a diuretic and anti-inflammatory agent, which may be why some traditional practitioners recommend them for urinary complaints, including UTIs. The rationale is that by promoting urination and reducing inflammation, fenugreek might help flush out bacteria and soothe irritated urinary tissues.

Despite these traditional uses, there is a lack of direct scientific studies evaluating fenugreek’s efficacy against the pathogens responsible for UTIs, such as Escherichia coli. While some in vitro studies have demonstrated mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of fenugreek extracts, these findings have not been specifically linked to urinary tract infections in human clinical trials. Most available research focuses on other health benefits of fenugreek, such as blood sugar control and lactation support. Therefore, while its use for UTIs persists in some traditional contexts, scientific validation for this specific indication is minimal at present.

In summary, fenugreek’s reputation as a supportive agent for UTIs is rooted in traditional medicine, but current scientific evidence is insufficient to recommend its use for this condition.
