Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) has a long history in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is primarily used for women's health issues, including menstrual disorders and menopause symptoms. Its use for ulcers is not a major traditional indication, but there are some records in herbal medicine suggesting it may be applied to digestive disturbances, including stomach discomfort and, less commonly, ulcers. The rationale is based on its purported ability to improve blood circulation and reduce inflammation, which traditional practitioners believe could aid in the healing of ulcerated tissues.

However, scientific studies specifically assessing dong quai’s efficacy for peptic or gastric ulcers are minimal. Some laboratory research suggests that dong quai possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which theoretically could help manage ulcers by reducing gastric mucosal damage. However, these findings are mostly from in vitro or animal studies, and there is a lack of robust clinical trials in humans.
