Zinc is scientifically validated for use in the support and treatment of external ulcerations, such as chronic wounds and skin ulcers. Zinc plays a crucial role in cellular metabolism, immune function, and the maintenance of skin integrity. Topical zinc preparations, such as zinc oxide or zinc sulfate, have been extensively studied for their ability to promote wound healing and reduce the risk of infection. Clinical trials and meta-analyses suggest that zinc supplementation or topical application can accelerate healing of leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and pressure ulcers, particularly in individuals with zinc deficiency.

The mechanisms underlying zinc’s efficacy include its anti-inflammatory properties, stimulation of epithelialization, promotion of collagen synthesis, and antibacterial effects. Zinc ions are involved in DNA synthesis, cell division, and protein synthesis, all of which are essential for tissue regeneration. Additionally, zinc’s antioxidant properties help protect the wound environment from oxidative stress, which can otherwise impede healing.

While the evidence is strong, it is most compelling in populations with underlying zinc deficiency or compromised healing, and not all studies show benefit in well-nourished individuals. Nevertheless, zinc-containing dressings and ointments are widely used in clinical settings, reflecting both scientific validation and longstanding clinical practice. In summary, topical zinc is a well-supported intervention for external ulcerations, with a solid foundation in both mechanistic and clinical research.
