Evidence supporting the use of: Green tea
For the health condition: Triglycerides (high)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) has been studied for its effects on lipid metabolism, including the reduction of elevated triglyceride levels. The primary active compounds in green tea, catechins—especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)—are thought to influence lipid absorption and metabolism. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated the impact of green tea and green tea extract supplementation on blood lipid profiles. A 2011 meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reviewed 14 randomized controlled trials and found that green tea consumption led to a significant reduction in serum triglycerides, though the effect size was modest. Other studies corroborate these findings, showing that regular consumption of green tea or its extracts can lower triglyceride levels, particularly in individuals with metabolic syndrome or elevated cardiovascular risk factors.
The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of intestinal lipid absorption, increased hepatic fatty acid oxidation, and improved insulin sensitivity. However, the magnitude of triglyceride reduction is generally modest, and green tea should not be considered a replacement for pharmaceutical or dietary interventions in cases of significantly elevated triglycerides. It is best regarded as a supportive adjunct. The overall body of evidence supports a beneficial, albeit limited, effect, justifying a moderate rating of 3 out of 5 for the strength of scientific validation.
