Berberine is a plant-derived alkaloid found in several herbs, such as Berberis vulgaris (barberry). Its use for metabolic and lipid disorders is supported by a growing body of scientific research. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that berberine supplementation can significantly reduce triglyceride levels in people with metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and dyslipidemia. The triglyceride-lowering effects are believed to result from its ability to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a key enzyme involved in regulating glucose and lipid metabolism. By activating AMPK, berberine can inhibit lipogenesis (fat production) and promote fatty acid oxidation, resulting in lower triglyceride levels in the blood.
Clinical studies have reported reductions in triglycerides ranging from 20% to 35% after 2-3 months of supplementation with berberine (typically 500 mg, two to three times daily). Meta-analyses published in reputable journals, such as Phytomedicine and Metabolism, support these findings and suggest that berberine is comparably effective to some pharmaceutical agents used for lipid lowering, with a favorable safety profile. However, most studies are of moderate duration and size, so more large-scale, long-term trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety. Nonetheless, current evidence justifies the use of berberine as an adjunct to lifestyle modification for managing high triglyceride levels.
