Platycodon root (Platycodon grandiflorus), commonly known as balloon flower root or Jie Geng in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asia for supporting respiratory health, including the throat and tonsils. In TCM, it is believed to "open up the lungs" and facilitate the expulsion of phlegm, as well as to "benefit the throat." Platycodon is often included in herbal formulas intended to address sore throat, cough, and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. The rationale for its use in supporting the tonsils—structures that play a role in immune defense in the throat—is primarily based on its traditional application for throat discomfort and infections, including tonsillitis. A few modern studies have explored the anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory activities of platycodon root extracts. Some in vitro and animal research suggests it may inhibit inflammatory mediators and possess antibacterial properties relevant to throat infections. However, robust clinical evidence specifically evaluating its efficacy in supporting the tonsils or treating tonsillitis is limited. Most current support for its use in this context is therefore traditional, with only preliminary scientific backing. As such, the evidence for platycodon root supporting the tonsils is rated as moderate on traditional grounds, but weak in terms of rigorous scientific validation.
