Magnesium is sometimes used as a supportive therapy for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD), primarily due to its role in muscle relaxation and neuromuscular health. TMJ disorders often involve muscle tension or spasms in the jaw, and magnesium is known to be a cofactor for enzymes involved in muscle contraction and relaxation. There is some scientific rationale suggesting that magnesium supplementation may help reduce muscle tightness, cramps, and associated pain, which are common symptoms in TMJ patients.

However, the direct scientific evidence specifically evaluating magnesium supplementation for TMJ is limited. Most of the supportive studies are either small-scale, observational, or extrapolated from research on magnesium’s effects on muscle cramps and tension in other body regions. A few small studies and case reports have suggested that magnesium, sometimes combined with other nutrients like calcium, may provide symptom relief for those with muscle-related TMJ disorders. Additionally, magnesium deficiency has been associated with increased muscle cramps and may exacerbate symptoms in susceptible individuals.

Overall, while there is a plausible biological mechanism and some limited clinical evidence, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically investigating magnesium for TMJ are lacking. Therefore, the evidence rating is moderate to low (2 out of 5). Magnesium may be considered as an adjunctive therapy, particularly in patients with suspected deficiency or significant muscle involvement, but it should not replace established TMJ treatments.
