Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chamomile has traditionally been used for its calming, anti-inflammatory, and mild analgesic effects. Its use in supporting or treating temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders is primarily based on these properties and its historical application in managing pain, muscle tension, and anxiety—factors often associated with TMJ dysfunction. Herbalists and traditional practitioners have recommended chamomile, typically as a tea or topical compress, for muscle relaxation and to ease stress, which can contribute to jaw clenching and TMJ discomfort. However, while chamomile's general anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxant effects have some scientific backing, there is very limited direct research or clinical evidence specifically supporting its use for TMJ disorders. Most recommendations stem from extrapolation rather than rigorous study. Therefore, while its use for TMJ is rooted in tradition and plausible based on its general properties, there is minimal scientific validation for this specific indication. Chamomile may offer mild symptomatic relief for some individuals, particularly those with stress-related jaw tension, but it should not be considered a primary or stand-alone treatment for TMJ disorders.
