Evidence supporting the use of: Zinc
For the body system: Thyroid Gland
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Zinc plays a critical role in thyroid function and its use for thyroid support is backed by scientific evidence. Zinc is an essential trace mineral that is required for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. Specifically, zinc is necessary for the proper function of the enzyme deiodinase, which converts the inactive thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) into the active form triiodothyronine (T3). Several studies have shown that zinc deficiency can result in hypothyroidism or suboptimal thyroid function. For example, research published in the journal Thyroid (2009) and other clinical studies have observed that individuals with low zinc status may have lower levels of T3 and may experience symptoms associated with hypothyroidism such as hair loss, fatigue, and weight gain. Supplementation with zinc has been shown to improve thyroid hormone levels in zinc-deficient individuals. However, in people with adequate zinc intake, additional supplementation does not appear to provide further thyroid benefits. Overall, while zinc is not a replacement for thyroid hormone therapy in cases of thyroid disease, maintaining sufficient zinc intake supports normal thyroid hormone production and metabolism. This scientific validation justifies the use of zinc as a supportive nutrient for thyroid health, especially in populations at risk of deficiency.
