Magnesium is supported by some scientific evidence for its role in maintaining or supporting testosterone levels, particularly in men with marginal or low magnesium status. Several studies have explored the relationship between magnesium and testosterone. For example, a 2011 randomized controlled trial published in the journal Biological Trace Element Research found that men who supplemented with magnesium (10 mg/kg body weight daily for four weeks) experienced increases in both free and total testosterone levels, especially when combined with physical activity. Additionally, observational studies have noted that men with higher magnesium levels tend to have higher testosterone concentrations. The proposed mechanisms include magnesium’s role in reducing oxidative stress, modulating inflammation, and improving bioavailability of testosterone by preventing its binding to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). However, while these results are promising, the overall quality and number of studies are limited, and most research has been conducted in specific populations (e.g., athletes or men with low baseline magnesium). Thus, magnesium is not a primary treatment for low testosterone but may support healthy testosterone levels as part of overall nutritional status, particularly in those who are deficient. More high-quality, large-scale randomized trials are needed to fully establish its effectiveness for this indication.
