For the body system: Testes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Zinc is scientifically validated as an essential mineral that plays a critical role in the function and health of the testes and the male reproductive system. Multiple studies have shown that zinc is required for normal testicular development, spermatogenesis (the production of sperm), and the synthesis of testosterone, the primary male sex hormone. Deficiency in zinc has been associated with hypogonadism (reduced function of the gonads), decreased testosterone levels, and impaired sperm quality and quantity. For example, research published in the journal Nutrition (1996) demonstrated that dietary zinc restriction in healthy adult males led to a significant drop in serum testosterone concentrations, which was reversible with zinc supplementation. Additional studies have observed that men with infertility often have lower seminal plasma zinc levels compared to fertile men, suggesting a role for zinc in male fertility. While zinc supplementation is not a panacea for all testicular or reproductive issues, and excessive intake can be harmful, the scientific evidence supports its use in maintaining normal testicular function, especially in cases of deficiency.
