For the body system: Testes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Zinc is an essential trace element with a well-established role in supporting the normal function of the testes and male reproductive system. Scientifically, zinc is involved in several aspects of male reproductive health, including hormone production, sperm quality, and testicular development. Multiple studies have demonstrated that zinc deficiency in men can lead to hypogonadism, decreased testosterone levels, and impaired spermatogenesis. For example, research published in the journal Nutrition (1996) reported that dietary zinc restriction in healthy young men significantly reduced serum testosterone concentrations, which were restored with zinc supplementation. Other studies have shown that zinc supplementation can improve sperm count, motility, and morphology in subfertile men, though effects tend to be more pronounced in those with baseline deficiencies. Zinc is also important for the structure and function of numerous enzymes and proteins within the testes, playing a role in DNA synthesis, cell division, and protection against oxidative stress.
While the scientific evidence is robust for zinc’s role in normal testicular physiology and in correcting deficiency-related reproductive issues, evidence for benefit in men with adequate zinc status is less clear, and supplementation above recommended levels is not generally advised. Nevertheless, its use in supporting the testes is justified by scientific research, especially when correcting or preventing deficiency.
