Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Relora® is a proprietary blend of extracts from Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense, traditionally used in Chinese medicine for stress and anxiety. Its use to support or treat sugar cravings is primarily based on its proposed stress-reducing effects, as chronic stress is linked to increased cravings for high-sugar foods. Scientific evidence for Relora®'s efficacy specifically in reducing sugar cravings is limited but emerging. A few small, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have indicated that Relora® supplementation may help alleviate stress and improve mood, which can indirectly reduce stress-related eating and cravings for sweets. For example, a 2013 pilot study in "Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition" found that overweight women taking Relora® reported less frequent stress-induced snacking and reduced cortisol exposure, though the effect on sugar cravings specifically was not robustly measured. Another study in "Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine" (2006) demonstrated reductions in stress and improvements in weight maintenance but did not directly assess sugar craving reduction.

Overall, while there is scientific rationale and some initial evidence that Relora® may help with stress-related eating (including sugar cravings), the evidence is limited in size and quality, and direct studies on sugar cravings per se are sparse. Thus, the current scientific support for Relora®'s use in treating sugar cravings is modest, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
