Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in numerous biological processes, including immune function, neurotransmitter regulation, and cellular metabolism. There is growing scientific interest in the relationship between zinc status and psychological health, particularly stress and mood disorders. Several observational studies have identified an association between low zinc levels and increased risk of depression and anxiety, suggesting a potential link between zinc deficiency and stress-related conditions. Experimental studies in animals have shown that zinc supplementation can influence the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which plays a central role in the body’s response to stress. Some small-scale clinical trials in humans have reported that zinc supplementation, often in combination with antidepressant therapy, may help reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression, but these results are not yet robust or consistent.
However, the direct use of zinc as a standalone intervention for stress in otherwise healthy individuals is not strongly supported by large, high-quality randomized controlled trials. Most evidence remains preliminary or indirect, and zinc supplementation is not a standard treatment for stress. Nevertheless, maintaining adequate zinc levels is important for overall health and may potentially benefit mood and stress regulation, especially in those who are deficient. In summary, while there is some scientific basis for zinc’s involvement in stress modulation, the strength of the evidence is limited, and further research is needed before it can be recommended specifically for stress management.
